Course programme

The screen is probably the most powerful means of communication and culture in the twenty-first century. Taking screen content seriously means thinking about the many ways in which what's on the screen is used to exchange ideas and information, tell and share stories, entertain and represent ourselves and make sense of the world around us.

Film and Screen Studies examines the cultural, social and political impact of screen-based representations, as well as their changing structures, technologies, industries and art forms. Beginning with the magic lantern in the nineteenth century, through the development of cinema and television and to today's digital, online and mobile revolutions, you will examine key issues and debates in the development and impact of these rapidly changing screen technologies and their associated cultural forms.

Course structure

The course is structured around core modules, options, special subjects, group projects and individual research.

It is designed to develop critical and research skills allowing you to address a range of screen practices within a broad social and cultural framework.

Areas of study

You will study the development of screen media, focusing on the production and consumption of screen images throughout the world. Specialist areas, such as early pioneers, world wars one and two, British cinema, Brighton on film, Hollywood, the avant garde, documentary, amateur practice, television news, soap opera, digital film, YouTube, Google and Facebook, will be examined in detail. This is not a practical film-making degree but there are some options that enable you to try your hand at making a film. The degree makes use of Screen Archive South East, and enjoys a close relationship with Cinecity - the annual Brighton film festival. Hove Museum & Art Gallery has a special collection devoted to the city's film pioneers and cinemas. Our thriving and highly rated research culture ensures that you will have the opportunity to learn from a wide range of visiting artists, film-makers, historians, researchers and writers.
