Course programme
Year 1
Year 1 of the course will build your skills and confidence in filmmaking techniques and theory.
In Semester 1 you will have an introduction to the organisation and practices required to go from idea to delivered piece. You will learn production fundamentals through introductory sessions on camera, lighting, sound recording and production management leading to fast turnaround small crew productions equipping you with the experience of filming the elements of a narrative fiction or narrative documentary.
In addition to this, you will learn post-production fundamentals through sessions on editing/editing workflow leading to the fast turnaround of edited sequences, ingesting footage, transcoding to proxies, organising the edit environment, editing, autoconforming, grading and titling.
Production organisational fundamentals will also be essential. Who does what, when and why? Cultivating an understanding of all the departments and roles, both to understand what your function is individually, and how and in what way you work together as a crew.
Semester 2 will be learning through doing. You will produce a short narrative film production, from idea to screen, followed by a short form documentary or music film production. Film theory will continue through scene analysis, the construction of meaning, film history and appreciation.
