From the silent era to the present day, cinema has produced a variety of performers and writers who have brought the gift of laughter to the silver screen. We will consider a variety of screen double acts and a couple of group ensembles whose names evoke decades of enduring screen laughter, discussing why we laugh and how they made us laugh?
We will look at extracts from classical Hollywood double acts including:
Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello.
Those looking for love: Doris Day and Rock Hudson, Diane Keaton and Woody Allen.
Anarchic Groups: The Marx Brothers and Monty Python.
The British Writers: Galton and Simpson, Clement and La Frenais.
Perfect Screen Buddies: Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.
Friends on and off screen: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
