Film Studies
Exam Board: WJEC
Additional Information: GCSE Media Studies or Art is desirable and a passion for film required.
COURSE OUTLINE
AS
You will be introduced to the language of the moving image and learn how to analyse its component codes as part of exploring film form. To demonstrate your understanding you will also both write about film extracts and undertake some practical work to put your ideas into action. Parallel to this you will study particular texts from American and British cinema as well as the film institutions that produce them. Film Studies is a genuinely fascinating and rewarding course for anyone who appreciates and enjoys film. It is an academic and challenging course which is an ideal accompaniment to subjects such as English, Drama and the Social Sciences. It is also valuable as a fourth AS Level to broaden curriculum experience.
A2
Here you are afforded the opportunity to undertake a small-scale research project which can be based on a star performer, director, auteur or institution of your choice. You will also take a role within a small group to produce a short film or sequence, developing the skills and knowledge gained in the AS year. The A2 course also extends your knowledge of film by exploring key debates about world cinema, spectatorship and individual film texts. Overall it will deepen your understanding of and passion for a range of films by enhancing your cine-literate skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection. The theoretical and practical skills obtained on this course are transferable into either employment or HE courses, especially in Film or Media Studies.
