Content

Sculpture is a challenging and dynamic subject to study. Artists working with sculpture and installation continue to be at the forefront of developments in art practice, pushing the boundaries of what might be considered as appropriate subjects, materials and contexts for art. The course supports a wide range of approaches that include: site based works, performance, contextual or 'socially engaged' projects, large scale installations, motorised artworks, photography, sound, film and video as well as what may be thought of as more 'traditional' forms of sculpture.

From the outset there is an emphasis on site and presentation of work. This is an essential element in understanding and developing an art practice in sculpture and all students are encouraged and offered opportunities to show work in the studio, the project space and in other external contexts throughout their time on the course.

Course Highlights

  • Professional Studies lecture series involving leading arts professionals.
  • Flexible studio provision.
  • Bookable project space.
  • A wide range of experience and approaches to art practice within the staff team, all of whom are practicing artists.

Structure

Year 1: You will be introduced to a range of approaches, processes and theoretical frameworks relevant to sculpture and installation and the wider context of contemporary art practice. You will develop your studio work based on self-initiated proposals and themes discussed and planned with tutors.

Year 2: You will develop your practice with an emphasis on experimentation, contextualisation and analysis. You will also be encouraged to participate in exhibitions and placement projects as part of a portfolio of professional studies activities. You will take an elective unit, selected from a broad range of options to enhance your core subject of study.

Year 3: Your time will be mainly devoted to the development of an ambitious and focused body of work leading to your degree exhibition and assessment. To support this you will present a dissertation or equivalent based on your research interests. The year includes professional practice seminars and lectures, mid-year exhibitions and review presentations.
