Course programme
Sculpture at Brighton positions itself at the centre of the contemporary fine art debate. Work ranges from the core approaches to materials, space and form to the wider fields of installation, performance, video, photographic work and 3D manipulation through computer technology.
You will work with real materials and will also extend your imagination into cyberspace and virtual realities.
On this course you will study a single discipline - sculpture - but also benefit from being part of our community of fine artists.
Course structure
Exhibiting your work followed up by group discussion and student-lead seminars are of great importance. Practicing artists give presentations, lectures and personal tutorials.
There are opportunities to assist artists and galleries in the production and installation of work. There are also opportunities to create work and exhibitions in the surrounding countryside, coastline and city centre.
You will learn the various sculptural and audio-visual processes needed to develop a personal approach with theory evolving alongside practice. Feedback will be given in the form of tutorials, discussions and written reports. You will follow your own individually initiated projects, closely monitored by tutors and the year leader.
Professional practice sessions, including funding and networking advice, studio provision, financial management, and folio and exhibition presentation, prepare students for life as working artists.
All the teaching staff are experienced professional practitioners.
Areas of study
The syllabus is divided into three inter-related categories involving hands-on studio work, personal research and contextual discussion. This is monitored through seminars, group critiques, and individual assessments, with the main practical work involving inductions in a wide range of material skills, alongside photography, video, computer (including 3D computer modeling) and installation skills. Student-curated exhibitions are encouraged, both locally and abroad.
Career and progression opportunities
Many graduates are successful in exhibiting nationally and internationally and obtaining commissions and residencies. They benefit from close contact with artists, galleries and arts organisation. Some take up arts related activities such as teaching, curating, or arts administration to support their practice. Most become both part-time employed and freelance self-employed. Others go on to masters and research degrees both in the UK and abroad.
