First Aid at Work (3 day)

What is the First Aid at Work course?
This three consecutive day course is aimed at those who require First Aid knowledge and skills which they will have to apply in their workplace. It is suitable for anyone, no matter what your level of knowledge. You are required to fully participate during the course, attend all the sessions and to reach the required standard of skills. These skills will be tested in a short practical exam at the end of the course.

Course topics
The following topics are some of the main subject areas that will be covered during the course:

• Emergency priorities, responsibilities and communication
• Resuscitation techniques
• Management of an unconscious casualty
• Control and treatment of bleeding and shock
• Treatment of burns and scalds
• Treatment of injuries to bones, muscles and joints
• Minor injuries
• Risk assessment, record keeping and reporting

Teaching and Learning
The course is very practical and participative and there will be plenty of opportunity to practise the skills you learn.

As every work place has different emergency scenarios, students will be given the opportunity to discuss their own requirements at the beginning of the course.

NB Students should dress comfortably an d women should preferably wear trousers.

Assessment details
You will be continually assessed throughout the course. At the end of the course you will also undertake a practical and oral examination. You must pass this to qualify for the Health and Safety Executive First Aid at Work Certificate.

The certificate is valid for three years. However, you must undertake a 3 hour Basic Skills Update/Annual Refresher course once a year for the next 2 years. You will have to attend a 12 hour First Aid at Work Re-qualification course after 3 years in order to renew your qualification in full. Notes
