What is the First Aid at Work Refresher course?
This course is for those who have previously qualified as a First Aider on a four-day full Health and Safety Approved course.

Your certificate or previous Refresher certificate that you posses should still be within its three year validation period and you will need to bring this with you to the first session for the College to photocopy. Full attendance of the two days is one of the qualifications criteria.

The course will enable you to refresh your skills and bring you up to date with any new procedures that may have been introduced since your last qualification.

Course topics
The following topics are some of the main subject areas that will be covered during the day:

• Emergency priorities, responsibilities and communication
• Resuscitation techniques
• Management of an unconscious casualty
• Control and treatment of bleeding and shock
• Treatment of burns and scalds
• Treatment of injuries to bones, muscles and joints
• Minor injuries
• Risk assessment, recording keeping and reporting

Teaching and Learning
The course is competency-based and is fairly flexible in nature.

As every workplace has different emergency scenarios, students will be given the opportunity to discuss their own requirements at the beginning of the course. The course is very practical and participative and there will be plenty of opportunity to practise the skills you learn.

NB Students should dress comfortably and women should preferably wear trousers.

Assessment details
You will be continually assessed throughout the course. At the end of the course you will also undertake a practical and oral examination. You must pass this to be able to continue to act as a First Aider within your workplace.

The certificate expires after three years and you must undertake another Refresher before the expiry date of your present qualification expires.
