This is the third year of flute study. The course will keep you practising and playing with others. You will learn new techniques and tools for playing, as well as new repertoire.

About this course

- play with better tone, tuning and expressive range
- improve articulation, breath control and a more flexible embouchure
- demonstrate an enhanced sense of rhythm, better sight reading and practice methods
- improve your listening skills, improvising and memory skills
- improve finger technique and scales
- improve reading music notation and general musicianship
- perform a range of repertoire and participate in ensemble pieces with greater confidence
- play at approximately Grade 4 (ABRSM / Trinity) level.

You need to bring your own flute with cleaning accessories, a notebook and pencil. You will need to buy music for the course; advice will be given by the tutor. Most ensemble music will be provided.

- continuation and development of all previous learning, i.e. tone, technique, articulation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, vibrato and posture
- aural perception, improvisation, sight-reading, memorisation, musical interpretation
- musical theory and style through a varied repertoire
- solo and ensemble performance.

Demonstration and explanation by tutor Group work in two to four parts Playing individually Listening to other students Playing with a pianist Listening to flute recordings Class discussion To make progress you will need to practise regularly between classes, ideally at least 30 minutes on at least 5 days a week Occasionally you will have small written assignments to complete outside of class.

Additional information

This course leads to Flute 3: module 2 next term. You may also be ready for an ensemble course such as Chamber music intermediate or Play popular music of the non-Western world.
