This one-day course presents an exciting programme exploring key aspects of the history and analysis of Irish art from the pre-Christian period to the present day. We will explore and identify key works of Irish art, addressing fine, applied and popular art forms. Throughout the day, Irish visual culture will be discussed within its national artistic, social and cultural contexts as well as within its place in a broader European perspective.

About this course

• Give an overview of specific periods within the history of Irish Art
• Recognise and analyse key works and how they were produced
• Participate in discussions about visual characteristics of a variety of styles
• Discuss works within their context (e.g. social, political, religious, artistic).

• Early Ireland, and the Book of Kells

You will be taught with slide presentations and group discussions. You might wish to bring a notebook. You might wish to buy some of the books on any reading list given out in class.
