Course programme

This course is specifically designed for all personnel who are required to drive either a wheeled or tracked Forward Tipping Dumper as part of their work and aims to provide them with a through understanding of the relevant operational and safety requirements. It is suitable for both those with little or no experience as well as those wanting to formalise previously gained experience in order to gain a recognised qualification.

The course duration is 5 days and will take place at our CPCS approved test centre at Kiveton Park.

The course contents are:

  • Basic construction, purpose and function of components, controls and gauges
  • How to carry out pre-use and running checks
  • Compliance with loading procedures and the ability to explain these to a transporter
  • Setting the machine for site and road travel
  • Travelling on various types of terrain including rough, undulating ground
  • Travelling up and down substantial inclines both loaded and unloaded
  • Manoeuvring within confined spaces both loaded and unloaded
  • Positioning to receive loads while ensuring load integrity and security
  • Discharging loads into trenches and over edges
  • Placing the dumper in and out of service condition

Course outcomes:

On completion of the course your employee will be able to:

  • Operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers' instruction and accepted good practice
  • Conduct the various checks and maintenance to be carried out before commencing work
  • Identify hazards and understand the principles of risk assessments
  • Know the safety precautions applicable to dumper operations
  • Know the capacities and limitations of the machine
  • Understand the responsibilities under Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other legislations

Please note:

Learners are required to hold a valid CSCS card and take the CPCS technical and theory tests. Upon successful completion they will be awarded a Red Operators card.
