Course programme
Award title: FdA Hospitality Management
Awarding body/institution: University of Portsmouth
The awarding body for the Foundation Degree is the University of Portsmouth and Highbury College is the provider of the course of study.
Teaching: You will learn through a mix of lectures, practical sessions, group work, work-related activities and independent study and research. In Semester 1 you will gain a “hands-on” overview of operations in our award-winning kitchens and restaurant.
Independent study: You will need to undertake significant independent study outside of taught sessions. For every 1 taught hour students should spend at least 1.5 hours studying independently away from College, equating to at least 18 hours per week in Year 1 and in Year 2. The exception to this is the Research Project unit in Year 2 where students are expected to spend 4 hours of independent study for every 1 taught hour.
Achievement: The Foundation Degree is achieved by passing all units (240 credits).
Assessment methods: Assessment is on a continuous basis with (usually) two assessments in each unit. Assessments take a variety of forms, such as written reports, essays, designing a product, presentations, running an event and group projects. There are timed tests in some units, but no “end of year” exams.
Staff: Full-time, part-time and associate lecturers (corporate associates) may teach on the Foundation Degree programme. Staff teaching on the programme have a variety of commercial/industrial and/or teaching experience.
