There are three main topic areas; Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measure, Statistics and Probability. Number and Algebra develops skills in working with numbers including fractions, decimals, and percentages; standard form and indices; introduces algebraic concepts and furthers techniques in graphical representation and solutions of equations. The Geometry and Measure topics look at angles and shapes, measurement and construction and well as trigonometry. Finally, Statistics and Probability deals with handling, interpreting and analysing data as well as probability theory.

Course programme
Entry Requirements
You will need a minimum grade D at GCSE or equivalent or show that you are working at Level 2 in an initial assessment. You also need to complete a foundation tier written test at enrolment and score 75% or more.
Delivery and Assessment
The award is 100% examination based, with all papers taken in the May/June series. There will be one calculator and one non-calculator paper. You will be assessed throughout the year with end of topic tests, mock examinations and regular homework. You will be expected to maintain a high level of attendance and complete all work set to a high standard to be eligible for exam entry.
Progression
A GCSE maths qualification will enable you to progress onto many higher level courses in science, business and education ; it is also a basic requirement for many degree courses. If you go straight into employment, this qualification will show that you have a good grasp and knowledge of numbers and problem solving skills.
