French GCE A Level
Qualification: AS/A2 - 2 year course
Course type: Level 3 (advanced)
Entry requirements:
4 x GCSE B grades. You should have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE level French. An A or A* grade will put you at a distinct advantage.
Head of Department: Mr John Ranson
Course assessment:
AS French is a language-based qualification testing all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) - there is no literature. It offers a natural transition from GCSE as many of the topics to be studied will already be familiar to you.
A2 French further develops all four language skills through the study of more advanced topics, most of which will be new to you. You will also have the opportunity to study aspects of French-language culture and society, including French literature and cinema. The final examination will cover all four language skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing.
What can this course offer me?
AS/A2 French offers you the chance to enhance your language skills, learn about the culture and society of the French-speaking world and also enhance your career prospects.
What will I learn?
You will be taught by well-qualified staff in modern, well-equipped classrooms. There will be individual, pair and group work activities, work with audio and video materials and language games.
You will make use of the Department's multimedia resources and, in order to help you develop your speaking skills, you will have a weekly conversation class with the College's French language assistant.
We run an annual, very successful, student exchange with a lycée located just outside Paris - an excellent and very enjoyable way to consolidate what you have learnt in class and make the language come alive!
The Department also organises visits to Sixth Form Days offered by local universities and trips to productions of French plays and screenings of French films.
What Makes a good French student?
You will want to get involved and participate in lessons as the subject is an interactive one. You should also have an interest in French society and culture.
Which other courses link well with this subject?
Any subject can be studied in combination with French at this level but iit s most often combined with English, Business Studies or a second foreign language. However, many students choose French as their fourth subject simply to broaden their horizons.
Future Opportunities
You may choose to study French on its own or as part of a combined degree with another subject, such as Law or Business Studies. You should be aware that the vast majority of employers will accept students with a French degree onto their graduate training schemes, whether or not the work itself directly involves foreign language skills. A high proportion of our students choose to study French in order to work in a wide variety of careers.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Did you know that, in British industry, employees who speak foreign languages earn more than those who do not!
