This stimulating course includes modules in the French language which will advance your written and oral French skills, whilst complementing them with a range of cultural, historical, political and film modules. You will be given the conceptual tools to understand how society is mediated by cinematic and electronic images, whilst being taught in the heart of London and in close proximity to notable institutes of film and French. You will also take a year abroad in a French-speaking country.

Teaching features innovative approaches to French language, literature, cultural, political and historical studies.

The year abroad offers students the unique opportunity for immersion in French culture. We have exchanges with a number of partner universities in France and French speaking countries, and the opportunity to apply for the English Language Assistantship Programme or to undertake an internship/ work placement in a French-speaking environment (typically sourced by students themselves).

The combination of language skills, cultural literacy and critical thinking means graduates from King’s are highly employable.

All students follow required modules in the French language to attain a high level of proficiency in written and spoken French.

Many graduates from the French with Film Studies BA course choose to remain in further education and go on to study in law, finance or media after graduation. The highly desirable combination of language skills, cultural literacy and critical thinking means that French graduates from King’s are in high demand in today’s employment market.

1st Year

Currently, students study the following core and compulsory modules. If there are options available the current choices are also shown. Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

You will study four required modules in your first year totalling 90 credits; you will also choose additional modules totalling 30 credits to make up the required 120 credits for the year.

You will take a further 30 credits in French, choosing from a range of modules, which may typically include:

  • French Narrative Texts: An Introduction (15 credits)
  • Text & Performance: An Introduction to French Theatre & Film (15 credits)
  • Revolution & Reaction in Modern French: An Introduction to Modern French History (15 credits)
  • French Political Thought (15 credits)

Film Studies

There are no optionlal Film Studies modules in year 1.
