PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This is a practical course which has proved of great interest to those students seeking entry to art colleges to supplement their main art studies or as a starting point for a career in Art and Design or the Media industries. The programme will consist of four units to complete the full A level or two units to complete the AS level. Each unit of work will emphasise different application of photographic skills including thematic
projects (portraits), darkroom skills and studio work.

The following Photography units include:

Unit 1 6031E

Module 1: Introductory Studies Marks and Traces

The Introductory Studies phase is a transitional phase between school and college. The primary concerns of Photographic Practice are the visual and tactile modes of expression and communication. The Introductory Studies Stage encourages the ability to observe, select and interpret with imagination, feeling and understanding. It endeavours to heighten visual and intellectual awareness through direct participation in practical work, relevant theory and problem solving.

Students work as a whole group for most of the first term. Group activities will begin in this term and individual broad based study will form the foundation of skills, understanding and good working practice for the development of work throughout all stages of the course.

Seminars in Photography History will be introduced at this stage to help contextualise studio/darkroom work and provide underpinning knowledge.
Communication and Information Technology will also be introduced at this stage through project based studio work.

A field study visit at this stage helps peer-bonding and ultimately leads to team building and a sense of belonging, aligning students to the A Level.

Module 2: Assignment Briefs/Photography Coursework: Time (incl. Marks and Traces)

This part of Unit 1 is concerned with the relationships between ideas and Photography practice. Ideas provide the starting point for much art and design practice, and they form an integral part of the creative process. As Photography is produced, ideas and outcomes are modified.

Students must develop a personal response to a given starting point, working sequentially through a series of ideas and outcomes, towards a well considered conclusion or conclusions. In this unit the broad starting points will provide opportunities for translating ideas into diverse and personal outcomes.

Work presented for assessment must show coverage of the four Assessment Objectives and submission must include; work journal, evidence of research, evidence of analysis, exploration of media, idea development, outcomes and visual and/ or written evaluation.

Unit 2 6032E
Externally Set Assignment - 30% of AS externally set and internally marked, externally moderated

The week between 5th of February and issuing of the Exam on the 26th February will be for any printing catch up and sketchbook work. The Externally Set Assignment represents the culmination of the AS course.

You will be given a 12 week preparatory period for the controlled test. During this period you may consult with staff and be supplied with supporting guidance and materials. The timed element (eight hours) must be carried out after May 2008 in the year of the examination.

The preparatory and supporting work is as important as the timed element in meeting the Assessment Objectives.

Submissions must include:

Work done during the 12-week preparatory period
Work journal/s
Other preparatory studies (research, prints, negatives, sketches and given exercises)
Unaided work produced under examination conditions in a period of eight hours
The work journal, preparatory/ supporting work and unaided work must show evidence of each of the four Assessment Objectives.

Unit 3 6033 E

Assignment Coursework Entropy:

Your first assignment for A2 will be entitled Entropy part 1. For this assignment you will be expected to research its meaning and undertake various exercises to interpret this brief before embarking on your own interpretation. You will also get an introduction to colour printing and processing

Weekly lectures/seminars in Photography History will be included at this stage to help contextualise studio/darkroom work and provide underpinning knowledge. Information and Communication Technology will also be encouraged at this stage through project based studio work.

A field study visit at this stage helps peer-bonding and ultimately leads to team building and a sense of belonging, aligning students with the A Level.

Your second assignment is called Development Entropy part 2 which is your development project from where you finished in the first part of Entropy. This part also includes a 3000-5000 word illustrated research essay which is based on your personal development project. This essay must include a cover sheet, contents page, main body and bibliography. Your research must include use of the library, books and journals as well as internet. You must include research from a minimum of 5 books on your bibliography.

Unit 4 6034 E
Externally Set Assignment - 15% of A2 externally set and internally marked, externally moderated

The Externally Set Assignment represents the culmination of the AS/A2 course. You will be given a 12 week preparatory period for the controlled exam. During this period you may consult with staff and be supplied with supporting guidance and materials. The timed element (twelve hours) must be carried in June 2008 in the year of the examination.

The preparatory and supporting work is as (if not more) important as the timed element in meeting the Assessment Objectives.

Submissions must include:

Work done during the 12-week preparatory period
Work journal/s
Other preparatory studies such as experiments, research, drawings and exercises
Unaided work produced under examination conditions in a period of twelve hours
The work journal, preparatory/ supporting work and unaided work must show evidence of each of the four Assessment Objectives.

The College offers a wide range of AS level subjects to choose from - so students can pick, with support from college staff, the combination that best suits their needs. Most students will start by taking between 3 - 4 AS levels before deciding which subjects to continue with in order to gain the full A level. The main things students should think about when deciding which subjects to take are their interests, what they are good at and what they might need for employment or progressing onto Higher Education in the future. Students on the AS/A level programme are supported by a strong tutorial element including careers education and the development of their personal and study skills.

Students will also be able to gain accreditation for Key Skills achievement that will earn UCAS points towards their application for Higher Education.

AS or A2 subjects ( usually just one) may be taken by suitably qualified BTEC students, subject to timetabling constraints.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
AS and A Levels are a traditional route onto level 3 Foundation Diploma (Art & Design) which in itself is the most widely recognised and desired qualification for entry to creative study at Higher Education. Foundation is part or the portfolio of qualifications offered by Visual & Performing Arts and Media within Croydon Sixth Form College. They are also seen by employers as indicators of a potential employee's intelligence, maturity and self organisation skills.

Most A Level students progress into full-time employment or onto Higher Education.

Opportunities to study Higher Education (HE)qualifications at Croydon Higher Education College are available.
