Access to Higher Education (Science) Diploma
Our Access to Higher Education (HE) programme offers adults, without the usual entry requirements needed to undertake a Level 3 programme such as A Levels, the opportunity to return to education and prepare for university entry. It provides a recognised alternative to A Levels and is specifically designed to give a thorough preparation in the skills needed for a degree-level course. Validated as meeting the entry requirements for UK institutions of HE, Access focuses on developing your academic skills and knowledge within a learning environment that meets the needs of adult students. A popular and nationally recognised qualification, enrolment figures for England and Wales show that there were over 40,000 people studying on 1,200 Access courses during the 2003/4 academic year. The programme aims to help students:
- Acquire and practice the academic and practical skills required by HE courses .
- Understand the major perspectives and approaches used in their chosen areas of study .
- Develop confidence in their ability to cope with the degree-level work .
- Discover relevant sources of information and support
- Mindful of the fact that many Access students find the idea of returning to education a daunting prospect, we aim to create a learning environment that meets the interests, needs and experiences of an adult student rather than resurrecting previous school experiences . You will have a personal tutor whom you will meet regularly and who will be able to give you support and advice. In addition, our dedicated and experienced Student Services team will provide you with specialist personal, financial, career and higher education support and advice. In many cases though, the greatest form of support will come from your like-minded colleagues on the course. Run by the College since 1989, the programme follows a modular structure that allows you to choose, as far as possible, your own particular programme from a range of subjects on offer. Previous students have progressed to a wide range of further study, in subject areas such as:
- Art Conservation
- Biochemistry
- Business
- English

- Nursing
