Mature students in particular will benefit from the balance of practical work, lectures, private study, demonstrations and visits contained within a one year course.
What qualifications will I need?
Introduction to Animal Care with Distinction or National Certificate in Animal Care with Credit grades in Biology and Health and Care, NVQ 2, four GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and Science. Particularly suitable for mature students who will be considered even if they lack the normal entry requirements.
What will I be learning about?
The course is made up of the following units.
- Animal science
- Animal handling and safe working
- Advanced animal health care
- Animal housing and feeding
- Industry experience in the land based sector
- Dog grooming
- Environmental and human interactions on the ecosystems
- Health and welfare of exotic pets
- Animals in Society
There will also be extra qualifications and enrichment including basic stockmanship and estate skills
What is involved?
Study at Kingston Maurward College and undertake 2 weeks of work experience within a relevant animal industry. Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction and industrial visits.
Where will it take me?
Self'employment or a wide range of employment opportunities including zoos, animal rescue and pet shops. Progression onto a Foundation Degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare or Veterinary Nursing courses.
What else does the course include?
First Aid at Work. Key Skills, NPTC Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines. NPTC Stockmanship.
What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.
What is next?
Foundation Degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. Veterinary Care Assistants Course. Foundation Degree in Marine Ecology.
How will I be assessed?
The units are assessed by a single assignment per unit. A range of continuous assessments including written assignments, practical tests, online tests and externally set assessments (final exam).
