You will also be encouraged to undertake a programme of work experience of at least 10 days in the industry; this is a valuable opportunity to utilise the new skills you will have acquired and to undertake research for the investigative project.

How will I learn?

Modules are delivered by a combination of interactive lectures, workshops, practical sessions and seminars. You will undertake relevant industry visits and we often have visiting guest speakers who can share their expertise with you.

Assessment is primarily by written assignment with some practical and presentation elements; this provides a good grounding for moving into higher education. You will also develop communication and interpersonal skills via the attainment of key skills.

What else might I want to know?

This qualification is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on practical work and academic lectures incorporating plenty of real-life situations. If you are interested in animals and wish to enter the industry or continuing to higher education but are not sure of a specialist subject area, the Advanced National Diploma will provide an all-round qualification covering essential knowledge and a range of animal management skills. You will be encouraged to take ownership of the management and development of the College's exotic collection whilst gaining valuable supervisory experience working with other duty groups.

As you will undertake duties you are advised to purchase a dustcoat / overalls and sensible steel toe-capped footwear once you begin on the programme. Your tutor may recommend textbooks that could prove useful during your studies.

We strongly advise that prospective students have gained some prior animal related work experience before starting the course.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the programme, you can progress into Higher Education either on a full time or part time basis in a related subject area. Alternatively you could enter the industry at a supervisory level in one of the following roles:
  • Kennels, catteries or rescue centres
  • Animal technician in education or research
  • Animal welfare
  • Animal health officer
