Applied Science BTEC First Diploma
This is a practical, work-related course that will provide you with an understanding of scientific principles and the practical applications of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will develop your laboratory skills and find out about working practices in related areas such as forensic science, food technology, analytical science, quality control and environmental science.

What will I study?
You will develop underpinning scientific knowledge, and find out about work in science related areas and the role of the science technician. You will also have the opportunity to learn about some specialist areas in more detail. You will complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and have a number of opportunities for visits to such places as the National Space Centre in Leicester.

You will take 2 core units:
  • Scientific Principles
  • Science Technician and the World of Work

You will also take 4 specialist units:
  • Chemistry Applications
  • Physical Sciences Applications
  • Working with Science
  • Anatomy and Physiology


How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through practical projects and assignments.

What can I do next?
On successful completion of the course, you will have a qualification which is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A-C. More advanced courses or training that you could go on to do include: BTEC National Diploma in Forensic Science; A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Work based training options in various fields may also be available.
