Entry Requirements
Enthusiasm and preferably a B or above at GCSE, a C grade if you are really keen.

Course content
If you are interested in language learning, other countries and different cultures, then these courses are for you. They are based on up-to-date themes and issues and you will make regular use of press articles, satellite TV, the Internet and the language laboratory. You will develop practical skills through group work and visits abroad. You will also revise basic grammar and then build up your knowledge of how the language works.
In your first year youll study four topics. These are Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living/Lifestyle and Family and Relationships. These build on what you have studied at GCSE and cover a wide range of interesting and engaging issues.
In the second year youll have another four topics Environment, Multi-cultural Society, Contemporary Social Issues and you can choose from two of the five cultural topics for in depth study.

How Will I Be Assessed?
In the first year your assessment is in two parts. There is a two hour exam which includes listening, reading and writing. This will account for 70% of your marks for the year. Then there is a 15 minute speaking test conducted with your teacher. This accounts for 30% of your marks for the year. The second year is very similar. The listening, reading and writing exam lasts for 2 hours and accounts for 70% of your marks for the year. The speaking test as in year one, lasts for 15 minutes and goes towards 30% of your marks for the year.

What Could I Do Next?
Travel, meet people, and discover the world! Use your skills to learn new languages. Combine languages with other subjects: business or international studies, engineering, computing, law, marketing, leisure and tourism or science.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
A good dictionary to use at home costs 10.00 to 20.00. You can subscribe to a foreign language newspaper such as Authentik (18.00 includes newspapers and tapes). Visits abroad cost 100.00 to 250.00.
