Entry Requirements

Course content
AS: Year 1
Philosophy teaches people to think clearly, to follow lines of reason, and to argue from premises to conclusions. It helps students develop excellent critical skills and is challenging and enlightening. Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom!
Unit 1: Reason and experience; the Idea of God.
Unit 2: God and the world (the problem of evil and related issues); the debate over freewill and determinism.
A2: Year 2
Unit 3: The Philosophy of Mind; the Philosophy of Religion.
Unit 4: Philosophical Problems: Hume.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Units 1 and 2 will be assessed by two examinations in June. The exams will last 1hr 30mins each. Students will be required to:
1. Outline various philosophical arguments.
2. Analyse and evaluate philosophical arguments.
Unit 3 assessed by a 1hr 30min examination the following June.
Unit 4 will be assessed by a 2hr exam.
Students will be required to:
1. Outline philosophical arguments.
2. Analyse, evaluate and criticise philosophical arguments.

The knowledge and skills gained from studying A Level Philosophy compliment any other area of study and careers that involve decision-making and critical thinking. Philosophy A Level is very well respected by all academic institutions.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
Students will be provided with key texts and handouts.
However students often prefer to buy their own texts so they can annotate them.
