Course programme
You will explore the historical and contemporary dimensions of globalisation as the basis for understanding the defining issues of our age. These include global society and politics, inequality and environmental decline, global networks and global communication, as well as fundamentalist religions and global human rights movements. Because globalisation transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries this degree is interdisciplinary, exploring specific global issues drawing on political, historical and cultural knowledges.
Course structure
A critical and independent attitude is developed through small group teaching, individual tutorials, lectures and project work. Your academic work is supported by a programme of workshops to develop the academic and independent research skills necessary for success, and an ethos of collaboration and support. You will acquire specialist knowledge of your chosen area of work, drawing on historical, political and cultural studies of globalisation.
Areas of study
In year 1 you will learn the political, historical, cultural and philosophical skills central to an exploration of global society through lectures and in small seminar groups.
The Year 2 Critical Traditions course deepens your knowledge of the historical, cultural and theoretical origins of the global world. You will question the history and politics of the West, challenge dominant ideas, and examine the enlightenment, feminism, postmodernism and Marxism.
In the final year you select a special study which completes your option work, and complete your own research project. The project is a key part of your degree. Here all of the skills, the knowledge, and the research that you have brought to the degree come together as you develop your own critical response to your chosen topic, challenging received opinions.
Career and progression opportunities
The degree is relevant to careers in the public sector, teaching, the caring professions, journalism, management and personnel, as well as to vocational training, postgraduate study and research. Students may also seek work in charities, international activist organisations, and potentially in the European Union or at the United Nations.
