About this course

Ideally, progressing from pre-16 education you will have GCSEs D Maths and English. All applicants will be assessed as to their suitability via an interview with the course tutor.

What will I be learning?

Taught in a state of the art, well equipped, Automotive Training Centre the learning programme involves you studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following;
- Light Vehicle Construction and Routine Maintenance
- Operating Principles of Light Vehicle Engines, Tyres, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems
- Operating Principles and Maintenance of Light Vehicle Transmission Systems
- Operating Principles and Maintenance Electrical and Electronic Systems

Also you will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in an automotive garage.

How will I learn?

All sessions are taught in the state of the art Automotive Training Centre. Comprising of modern workshops with the latest equipment, a cutting edge electronic laboratory, ITC suits and well equipped classrooms.

As you learn, you will be assessed in the workshop on your ability to complete set practical assessments and record information in a portfolio. You will also have technical knowledge tests via written phase tests and online computer exams that are graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction to allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the technicalities of working on modern vehicles.

If you can access appropriate work experience while undertaking this award then you will be encouraged to work towards the competencies required for NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or an Apprenticeship.

What else might I want to know?

This Level 1 qualification is an ideal starting point for your career in the automotive industry. It will provide you with the essential knowledge for a future working on light vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

The Automotive Section runs enrichment trips activities throughout the year. These include team building events, visits to SEAT race team and automotive manufacturers.

Opportunity for you to improve literacy and numeracy is given as Key Skills are an integral part of this qualification.

You will need to provide overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions as well as writing equipment for theory based sessions.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion you can progress to a Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Level 2 or, with appropriate employment, to an Apprenticeship including working towards an NVQ qualification.
