About this course

Last year, students visited the London Metal Exchange, and attended a Globalisation conference at Harrow College. In addition, we ran in-house sessions given by an A level examiner to enhance examination success.

Business: BTEC National Certificate
This is a practical and work-related course aimed at students who are interested in making a career in business. You are encouraged to focus on a particular subject area and develop a range of specialist skills and knowledge in this area.

Course details
The certificate is made up of twelve units. There are four core units which all students take and a further eight specialist units allow individuals to pursue particular career paths in some depth. Units include: Resources, Human Marketing, Management and Communication.

How is it assessed?
All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. To get the certificate, you must at least pass 10 units.

Course duration
Two years full-time.

What do I need to study this subject?
You should have five GCSE grades A*-C including English Language, or a Merit at Vocational level 2, e.g. BTEC First. You will need a high standard of written and spoken English, the ability to use and understand numbers and good IT skills.

Where can this lead me?
Most students progress onto university degree courses in Business, or to professional qualifications such as those offered by the Chartered Institutes of Marketing, Management Accountants and Personnel Development. You will receive exemptions if you have successfully completed certain units of the BTEC National course.

What are the enrichment opportunities?
Many visits are held throughout the two years, including the Coca-Cola manufacturing plant. All students are required to set up their own business within the Young Enterprise Scheme. A two-week work experience placement is also arranged.
