Diploma in Complementary Therapies

What will I be learning?

You will learn skills that you will utilise in reflexology, aromatherapy and body massage routines. You will study nutrition and client consultation, enabling you to refer clients for a variety of treatments. Anatomy and Physiology is also studied.

You will be required to work to commercial timings when carrying out treatments and part of your training will be aimed specifically at ensuring you are able to cope with the demands of a commercial salon environment. The qualification is due to be revised during 2008/2009; as a result of this the focus of the areas of study may change.

How will I learn?

The course is a mix of practical and theory sessions delivered by qualified and experienced Complementary Therapists. The emphasis is towards practical development and there are more salon sessions than theory. Initially you will be working on members of your group and you will be required to model for other students.

Once you have reached a satisfactory standard you will work on clients (members of the general public) booked through our dedicated reception area. All assessment is carried out on paying clients. Case studies form a significant part of this course and will require you to devote your own time outside of the course hours in carrying out and writing up the studies.

What else might I want to know?

You are required to buy a uniform and kits of equipment.

You will have the opportunity to take part in organised visits to the main trade exhibitions each year.

Pamper days are provided for several local groups including The Torbay Carer's Trust and Alzheimer's Society we have also made links with Rowcroft Hospice and deliver pamper days to carer's for their patients. These experiences give you the chance to work with different clients and are a useful preparation for employment.

Key skills are vital for the development a professional image and salon persona. Employers in surveys state that they require basic IT, communication and number skills in their workforce.
There is an opportunity to study IT as a part of this course.

What can I do afterwards?

The skills learned could lead to self employment or provide an opening into the medical care and spa industry sectors.

You may wish to add to your skills by studying further and the Beauty & Complementary Therapy Section at South Devon College has many progression routes on offer. We have courses for those wishing to follow general beauty therapy, nail technology, make-up or further complementary therapy skills.
