About this course

Progression from a successfully completed Level 2 automotive course is considered to be essential. You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at C including Maths and English. All applicants will be assessed as to their suitability via an interview with the course tutor.

What will I be learning?

Taught in a state of the art, well equipped, Automotive Training Centre the learning programme involves you studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following;
- Diagnosis and Rectification of: Engine and component faults
- Diagnosis and Rectification of: Chassis system faults
- Diagnosis and Rectification of: Auxiliary equipment electrical faults
- Inspection of Vehicles

Also you gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in an automotive garage.

How will I learn?

All your practical and theory lessons are taught in the Automotive Training Centre. This comprises of modern workshops with the latest equipment, ICT suits and well equipped classrooms.

As you learn, you will be assessed in the workshop on your ability to complete set practical assessments and record information in a portfolio. You will also have technical knowledge tests via written phase tests and online computer exams that are graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction to allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the technicalities of working on modern vehicles.

If you can access appropriate work experience while undertaking this certificate then you will be encouraged to work towards the competencies required for NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or an Apprenticeship.

What else might I want to know?

This Level 3 qualification covers the technical needs you will need for todays automotive repair industry, the diagnosis of complex faults and advanced systems operation. This qualification provides the essential knowledge for technicians working on vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

As part of your automotive programme you will be given the opportunity to experience work with local automotive companies. Enrichment activities involve working with businesses on projects such as emission improvements, problem solving activities, trips and visits to motor shows and manufacturers. During this time you will be able to practise your new advanced skills and develop your portfolio of evidence.

Opportunity to improve literacy and numeracy is given as Key Skills are an integral part of this qualification.

You will need to provide overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions as well as writing equipment for theory based sessions.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the Diploma, you can progress into employment as an apprentice where you can work towards an NVQ.
