Why choose English Language?
Whichever of the three separate English courses you choose, we expect that you will learn to think for yourself; you will acquire an intellectual toolkit with which to analyse any text that crosses your path; you will find that individual creative contributio.
Key Features of English Language at Hills Road:
· The department has an independent study room in which you will find electronic, audio-visual and book-based resources in addition to the well-stocked resources available from the College library.
· Voicesis the student-run society which offers students the chance to explore their interest in English beyond the classroom. Within Voices we currently have the following student-run groups: Creative Fiction Society, Poetry Forum, Book Club, Film-makers Union, Comedy Players, and PaperMail, a student produced electronic newspaper. Each year there are opportunities for new students to take Voices in new directions.
· We have a programme of events that take place every Thursday lunchtime. These have included a poetry celebration on National Poetry Day, speakers from Cambridge colleges on a range of topics including Shakespearean comedy, and a talk on getting published from a media professional. The department organises regular conferences on topics such as ?Post-Colonial Literature?, ?The Monologue? and ?The Modern Novel?.
· We run several theatre visits; recent trips have includedOthelloat The Globe,Statement of Regretat The National andThe Tempestat the Mumford in Cambridge.
· In 2008 an entirely student-produced performance of Brian Friel?sTranslations(a set text) was put on in the Robinson Theatre and in recent years the department has put on open-air Shakespeare productions, includingMeasure for MeasureandAs You Like It.
· For keen journalists our Newsday team produces a newspaper in a single day.
· We offer support surgeries, with a dedicated session once a week for each English course.
