PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
What can I expect on the course?
The Foundation Degree Legal Practice is a challenging and exciting qualifying Foundation Degree which will help to
broaden knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of the practice of law in many of its different aspects.
A Foundation Degree is recognised by the Bar Council and the Law Society and allows you to study towards becoming
a solicitor or barrister.

In the final year of the Foundation Degree Legal Practice the work experience module combines study with the opportunity to work in a legal practice environment. Employers have been active
in the design of the Degree and most work placements will be within the London criminal justice system, large businesses
or law firms.

How is the course structured?
The Foundation Degree Legal Practice is modular, with four subjects taken per semester on the full-time route and two
and a half or three subjects studied on the part-time equivalent per semester. Modules are delivered using a mixture
of interactive lectures and seminars, which combine individual and group work including student presentations and reports on various aspects of law and legal practice.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on oral presentations,(which may be either group or individually-based), reflective practice
on your study needs, written assignments, seminar participation and end of semester exams. An organisational profile,
professional log and employers report form the assessment for the work experience module.

What are the career opportunities?
This course is an innovative recent addition to our portfolio of Law courses. It is designed for those who wish to work
within a Legal environment and/or continue their studies towards a LLB (Hons) Degree and professional qualification.
Successful completion of the Foundation Degree Legal Practice will provide you with three options.

Firstly, the Foundation Degree Legal Practice is work-place orientated and the qualification is recognised by and
is equivalent to the ILEX Level 3 Diploma. This allows you to enter legal practice as a part qualified legal executive within
a firm of solicitors, a large corporation, or an agency of the London Criminal Justice Board such as the Crown Prosecution
Service or HM Court Service.Working as a legal executive is, subject to satisfying the Institution of Legal Executives
requirements, an alternative route to qualifying as a solicitor.

Secondly, you can progress onto the second year of the LLB (Hons) Degree and complete a full Law Degree. Entry
to the legal profession can then be accessed by following a further period of study (the Bar Vocational Course or
the Legal Practice Course), and finally a period of professional training.

Thirdly, as the qualification also provides exemption from the Professional Diploma in Law (PDL) awarded by the Institute of
Legal Executives (ILEX Level 3), it enables you to progress directly to the Professional Higher Diploma in Law (ILEX Level 6) and continue studying part-time for ILEX Level
6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law. At the same time you could work in practice as a legal executive.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
LLB (Hons) Year 2, BA (Hons) Year 3.
