This course is intended for those who have previously taken GCSE examinations and achieved at least 4 D grades, including English Language and who wish to progress to AS/A levels in mainly Humanties subjects.

If you have achieved the above but know that you wish to pursue, for example, mainly Business, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or Science subjects at FE Level 3 (AS/A levels or BTEC Nationals) you will be advised to enrol on a suitable BTEC First Diploma course.

You will be invited to attend a successful interview with satisfactory references providing information on behaviour, punctuality and attendance. You will also be required to undertake initial assessments at the appropriate level.

Below are overviews of the GCSE subjects offered:

Business Communications Systems
This is an exciting subject which integrates aspects of the business world with the practical use of key ICT applications, including Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Databases. It develops a broad experience of the range of business and
communication systems and an understanding of their capabilities and limitations in supporting business organisations. There is an emphasis on assessment through practical coursework tasks (40% of the total marks) plus one examination of up to two hours (60%).

English
You will learn how to use spoken and written English precisely and accurately. You will study a range of literature, including a Shakespeare text and modern poetry. You will also produce a coursework folder and sit two exam papers at the end of the year.

Humanities
This involves the study of issues relating to culture, beliefs, political and environmental issues. You will also focus on a special subject, for example, Patterns of Family Life or Democracy and Power.

Maths
If you achieved a D or at least a strong E at Intermediate Level in Maths, you may re-take the GCSE in Mathematics. If you obtained a weak E grade or below you will be entered for the Adult Numeracy qualification at Level 1. This will help you improve your understanding and basic Numeracy skills. Once you have passed this qualification, you may enter for GCSE Maths.

Sociology
Sociology is the study of human society and the place of the individual within it. You will study study a number of topics which are likely to include, for example, topics such as Education, Poverty, Deviance and Class Issues.

PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
Successful completion of the full-time GCSE course will usually allow you to progress to the AS course in appropriate subjects.
