Who is this course for?

This is a one year part-time revision course designed for students who wish to retake their GCSE Biology.

What qualifications or experience do I need ?

You will be expected to have at least a grade D in core science and grade D in Additional Science. We will consider BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Science, subject to your performance in the pre-enrolment test. You will also be expected to demonstrate through assessment, a standard of literacy and numeracy suitable for a level 2 qualification. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science. Sufficient knowledge and understanding of the subject to be able to progress through the course and have access to the full range og GCSE grades.

What will I study ?

All students take three 3 units covering such topics as cells, genetic variation, homeostasis, drugs and their impact, energy and biomass and how science works.

How will I be assessed ?

All units will be assessed by one hour written exams consisting of short and structured questions. Each paper accounts for 25% of the overall marks and your work will be assessed for the quality of your written communication skills. You will also have to complete an Investigative Skills Assignment which is used to assess biology practical work and scientific data handling. This accounts for the remaining 25% of the marks. Lessons will consist of lectures and some laboratory based practical exercises as appropriate.

What qualifications could I achieve ?

On successful completion of this course, you will achieve GCSE certificates in each subject studied.

How do I join the course ?

You will need to complete an application form and be interviewed by a member of the course team or other designated interviewer.

Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?

While every attempt is made to keep the cost to the candidate to a minimum, the college reserves the right to charge candidates amounts over and above published fees in response to any additional charges from the awarding body. Candidates will, however, have to purchase a lab coat for use in practical lessons.
