Geography AS/A2
Geography will appeal to students who are interested in the study of people and the environment. You will explore processes in the natural world, their impact on the landscapes around you and the effects of human development on natural systems. Fieldwork is an important part of the course, allowing you to undertake first hand investigations, and there is one compulsory fieldwork residential as well as fieldwork activities that are locally based.
Geography combines well with both arts and science subjects.
What will I study?
Throughout the course you will research case studies and take part in practical work, developing skills in graphical and statistical work and the interpretation of maps.
AS: In the first year you will study both physical and human environments and how they interact. You will look at the causes and impacts of headline global issues such as climate change, global warming and economic inequalities. You will also investigate the management of coastlines as well as rural and urban environments.
A2: In the second year you will investigate and research the use and management of key resources such as energy, water, oil and technology. You will also study a research topic chosen from a wide range of subjects from tectonic hazards to cultural diversity.
How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 written exams at the end of year one.
A2: 1 written exam in January and 1 in June of year two.
What can I do next?
Geography is an extremely versatile subject which is a valuable foundation for both Science and Humanities subjects at Higher Education. There are a wide range of Geography courses available, and the subject is particularly useful for students interested in further study or work in the areas of Travel and Tourism, Civil Engineering, Surveying, Environmental Science, Architecture and Meteorology.
