Global Challenges investigates the meaning, causes, impacts and management of global issues such as climate change, hazard zones, globalisation and migration. Geographical investigations will focus on extreme weather and unequal spaces with an emphasis on fieldwork, research and investigation. A2: Contested Planet investigates issues of energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity.

What will I study?
AS:
Global Challenges investigates the meaning, causes, impacts and management of global issues such as climate change, hazard zones, globalisation and migration.
Geographical investigations will focus on extreme weather and unequal spaces with an emphasis on fieldwork, research and investigation.
A2:
Contested Planet investigates issues of energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity, superpowers, the development gap and the technological fix.
Geographical research will give students a choice from a range of research topics including tectonic activity, food supply problems and tourism pressures.
Study Visits
A residential field study trip is a compulsory part of the AS course and day visits are also included.
The A2 course also includes a compulsory field study trip.
Cost
£135 (cost in 2009) for the AS residential field trip (March); no more than £10 per day trip.
Assessment
Four externally assessed units involving examinations, investigations and research, 2 in the AS and 2 in the A2 year.
Useful supporting courses
This course can be combined with any other subject but links particularly well with Geology and Environmental Science, and has overlaps with some aspects of Biology, Chemistry, Business Studies, Economics and Sociology. Adding language units in French, German or Spanish could extend your job prospects.
