About this course
A GCSE in Art or Graphics is desirable, although not essential. You should have a keen interest in art and graphic design and have experience of producing your own artwork. If you do not have a GCSE grade C in Art or Graphics, you should bring a portfolio of work to your interview.

Graphics AS/A2
The work of graphic designers enriches the world around us from web sites and computer graphics to famous logos and book illustration. This course will appeal to students who have an interest in design as a career, or to complement related subjects across the sciences and art.
You will produce work in a variety of media. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of graphic design but you will also study various graphic designers working in different areas through research and trips to exhibitions.
What will I study?
You will have the opportunity to produce a wide variety of work using software such as Photoshop as well as more traditional media. You will explore and analyse work by graphic designers working in the areas of illustration, advertising, computer graphics and film, television and animation.
AS: In the first year you will explore the work done by famous graphic designers and build a wide portfolio of work. You will develop your skills in the use of imagery, typography and page layout.
A2: In the second year you will have more freedom to work independently on extended projects based on themes or areas of graphic design that interest you most. You will continue to develop your skills as a graphic designer producing a portfolio of work in your choice of media.
How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 coursework projects, plus 5 hours of work under timed conditions.
A2: 2 coursework projects, a written personal study and 15 hours of work under timed conditions.
