This is a full- time course and you will need to be at college for four days a week from 9.00am till 5.00pm. The day you are not at college will be for work experience. We can help you find an employer for this day.

This course is for people who would like to work in this area or who are interested in becoming one of the following: Professional Gardeners and Soft Landscapers (Decorative Horticulture), Hard Landscapers, Groundstaff and/or Greenkeepers.

Is there any work experience involved?
Yes, apart from the one day a week mentioned above you will also be involved in working on projects with local employers during the teaching week.
What if I need extra support during my course?
The course is designed so that you can progress at your own speed. There is extra support available from Student Support Services and this can be discussed at interview.
Is practical work involved in the course?
Yes, it will be a very practical course that will prepare you to make the decision about which route you want to take next.
How is the course assessed?
You will get the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge through practical demonstration. For this reason you will be involved in projects at college and in the community. Your abilities will be assessed through observation and verbal questioning.
There are no exams in the NVQ1 programme!
Career Progression:
On the Level 1 course you will study all parts of the jobs listed above. If you later decide to move on to Level 2 you can study one particular area of Horticulture in more detail.
Other Information:
You are required to provide steel toe capped boots and overalls for practical work.
