National Diploma in Health and Social Care

Is this course right for me?

Health and Social Care is about helping people with their lives. This course teaches you how to provide support in a holistic way.

What will I be learning?

You will study 8 core units including how to communicate effectively with different people, lifespan development, working in health and social care, health and safety, equality and diversity, anatomy and physiology, developmental psychology plus sociology. There is also opportunity to take optional modules including research, complementary therapies, counselling, health education, working with children and young people, dealing with challenging behaviour, physiological disorders, infection control and working with individuals with additional needs.

You will be expected to undertake 100 hours of work experience in a variety of settings including hospitals, disability centres, day care centres for the elderly or special needs schools. The placements are a mandatory part of the course as vital skills and experiences will be gained and are essential for your progression.

The main aims are to introduce key theories, information, concepts, and ideas, explaining difficult points and providing a starting point for additional individual study. Ideas from previous study will be tied together and examples provided to help you learn challenging topics. New and up-to-date information that may not be in the textbook will also be provided through health professional expertise. Community service projects allow you to apply the lessons learned in the classroom to real-life situations and experiences.

What else might I want to know?

As you will be working with vulnerable individuals, acceptance on to this course will require you to apply for an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure at cost of ??38. There is also a college uniform requirement for which there is a small charge of approximately ??15. There may also be the opportunity to take part in educational trips and visits as a part of this programme of study for which there may be additional costs.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the National Diploma in Health and Social Care you could continue with your studies at South Devon College by applying to progress to the Foundation Degrees in Healthcare Practice or Children and Young People. The qualification carries UCAS tariff points which will enable you to access Higher Education at University subject to individual acceptance criteria, this could lead to a career in Nursing, Social Work, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or other related fields.
