Why should I study NCFE Level 1 Preparation for Entry to the Uniformed Services?
This is a course that combines sport and fitness with outdoor activities and classroom activities that will give you a great basis for entry to the services. The course leads to the next level of Uniformed Services, a career within the Uniformed Services or other further education courses.

Up to eleven certificates are obtainable through studying on this course. Can you think of any other which would offer you so many? We couldn't.

This course is ideal for those who wish to join any one of the following:

  • Police Force
  • Prison Service
  • Armed Forces
  • Fire Service
  • Ambulance Service


What will be studied on the course?
You will study the following six mandatory and two optional units:

  • Investigate work opportunities in the uniformed services
  • Well-being and physical fitness (Basic training)
  • Teamwork and problem solving
  • Self-discipline and development or Health, Safety and hygiene
  • Map Reading and Navigation
  • Service Routine
  • Participate in adventurous activities
  • Competitive Sports



Additional qualifications include:
Key Skills in Communication, ICT and Application of Number, Community Sports Leaders Award, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, First Aid Certificate, Food Hygiene Certificate, Health and Safety Certificate, Foundation Certificate in Exercise Studies and the new V Award for voluntary work (Certificate with V Inspired).

When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and last for one academic year ending in June.

**The course is based at our Consett campus and the Belle Vue Sports Centre, with offsite visits to the local open countryside and Uniformed Service Centres.

How will the learner be assessed?
A minimum attendance of 80% for activities is required to qualify for continuous assessment. Units are completed through a series of assignments, self-assessment plans, written and practical tests.

Candidates must be in good physical health and able to benefit from intensive training. Fitness testing is carried out on a regular basis. All students are required to attend outdoor pursuits activities and training visits appropriate to course modules.

How much will the course cost?
UK or EU students on a full-time Further Education programme at Derwentside College do not have to pay tuition, registration and examination/certification/assessment fees.

Learners may be entitled to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).

A compulsory course uniform: two polo shirts and fleece/jacket (Approx £50). Sports clothing and appropriate footwear for hill walking and expeditions will be required.

What progression routes are available?
Many of our students use this qualification to go into the services. Students who have successfully completed the Level 1 Uniformed Services course may progress onto the Level 2. Many also stay at College and progress to the Level 3 course. This course can also lead to an Intermediate academic course such as BTEC First Diploma in Sport or Level 2 programmes in Health & Social Care, Engineering etc.
