What will be studied on the course?
You will have the opportunity to study the following six mandatory and two optional units:

  • Preparation for entry to the uniformed service of your own choice
  • Develop aspects of physical fitness (Basic training)
  • Leadership skills
  • Legal implications of physical actions
  • Map Reading and Navigation
  • Current Affairs
  • Assist in planning adventurous activities
  • Service Routine



Additional qualifications include:
Key Skills, A Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Higher Sports Leaders Award (Sports Leader UK) and the V Award (volunteering certificate with V Inspired).

When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?
You will need to have successfully achieved the Level 2 Uniformed Services course together with Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication at Level 2. You must be interested in a career with the uniformed services, want to improve fitness, take part in team activities and adventurous pursuits. You should have a disciplined approach and be personally motivated to take part and give your best. All applicants will be given a selection interview.

**The course is based at our Consett campus and the Belle Vue Sports Centre, with offsite visits to the local open countryside and Uniformed Service Centres.

How will the learner be assessed?
A minimum attendance of 80% for activities is required to qualify for continuous assessment. Units are completed through a series of assignments, self-assessment plans, written and practical tests.

Candidates must be in good physical health and able to benefit from intensive training. Fitness testing is carried out on a regular basis. All students are required to attend outdoor pursuits activities and training visits appropriate to course modules.

How much will the course cost?
UK or EU students on a full-time Further Education programme at Derwentside College do not have to pay tuition, registration and examination/certification/assessment fees.
Some learners may be entitled to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).
Course uniform is required, presently full tracksuit, two polo shirts and fleece/jacket (Approx £50). Sports clothing and appropriate footwear for hill walking and expeditions will be required.

What progression routes are available?
Many of our students use this qualification to pursue a career with:

  • Community Service Organisations
  • Private Security Services


Progression could also be to further education such as 'AS' and 'A' level and National Certificate programmes.
