EAL NVQs are work-based qualifications designed to meet the needs of Education and Industry in the 21st Century. The NVQ Level 1 in Performing Engineering Operations provides a comprehensive taster into Engineering for those who may be considering seeking employment within Engineering. This qualification can be successfully completed within the College environment without the need for work based evidence from industry and therefore, it is ideal for those who have yet to find employment. The course will give candidates a good working knowledge of practical skills that employers demand along with team working and self-development skills. The NVQ programmes are validated by SEMTA (Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance and follow national standards. The NVQ Level 1 in Performing Engineering Operations has the following units: Working safely in an engineering environment Working efficiently and effectively in engineering Using and communicating technical information Making components using hand tools and fitting techniques Using lathes for turning operations Candidates must supply: Overalls Safety footwear Scientific Calculator General Stationery

Assessment: Each unit of study contains a list of tasks that have to be successfully completed to a required standard. These tasks can be assessed in a number of different ways such as: Observation, questioning practical competency and photographic evidence of work produced. Candidates will complete a folder of evidence of work produced during the course that will consist of exercises, logbook entries etc. When the required number of units has been completed to the recognised standard the candidate will be awarded with an NVQ Level 1 in Performing Engineering Operations.
Progression:
Progression is onto the First Diploma in Engineering. This is followed by a National Diploma thereafter.
If the candidate gains employment progression would be onto an NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations as part of an Apprenticeship Programme.
These courses are linked to an academic study programme where candidates will support their practical knowledge with study of City & Guilds or BTEC certificates.
