Is it right for me?
Are you interested in working with animals? Do you need some support to achieve your career aims? You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills in animal care with this one year practical programme, with time spent both in College and within the animal care industry. Care of animals will be taught using the wide range of species at the College. The Practical Animal Care course is designed to encourage you to develop the abilities and personal qualities that will equip you for working life. You will develop the skills required to gain employment, or to progress onto further training programmes, for example Apprenticeships, Basic Animal Care or Introduction to Animal Care courses.
What qualifications will I need?
Entry level qualification, and/or enthusiasm to work with animals. GCSE grade F to G
What will I be learning about?
Feeding, cleaning out, moving, handling and health of a variety of species.
Working with others and improving your own performance will also be a key area of the course.
The main qualification will be substantially supported by fundamental skills in numeracy and literacy.
In addition to this, you will gain a Certificate in Practical Environmental and Conservation Skills, which will provide you with a better understanding of countryside topics.
What is involved?
Study at Kingston Maurward College 4 days per week and undertake work experience 1 day a week, either at Kingston Maurward College or with a local business. Practical instruction, demonstrations and visits.
Where will it take me?
Basic junior posts assisting animal care organisations (eg kennels/catteries, animal sanctuaries)

Basic / key skills
What materials are required?
Overalls, steel toe'capped boots or work boots. Writing materials (pens, pencils, paper and ring binder with dividers.
What is next?
Basic Animal Care and Skills course. Introduction to Animal Care. Work Based Learning Apprenticeship.
How will I be assessed?
Continual assessment by producing a portfolio of evidence, including practical assignments, plus an on'line test in May.
