Course content
The BTEC National Diploma in Uniformed Services is intended to prepare students for entry into the public services or Higher Education, and enhance career prospects within the public sector. This is an 18 unit course which covers government policies and the public services, team leadership, citizenship and contemporary society, team development, understanding discipline, diversity, physical preparation, international perspectives, outdoor and adventurous expeditions, skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities, skills for water-based outdoor and adventurous activities, crime and its effects on society, command and control, planning for and management of major incidents, uniformed services employment, understanding the criminal justice system and police powers, understanding behaviour and communication and technology.
In addition you will study community sports leader, gain a watersports qualification and a first aid certificate.
It is advisable to have a strong interest in the services and improving fitness levels.
How Will I Be Assessed?
There are no exams to pass. You will compile a portfolio of your assessments. There will be one written assignment per unit and other assessments will take the form of tutor observations, placement reports, photographic or video evidence, diary entries, group work etc. Grading is completed as pass, merit or distinction.
What Could I Do Next?
BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education (universities and colleges). For the uniformed services you could go into a career such as the Police, Fire & Rescue service, the Armed Forces, Security or Customs and Excise.
Are There Any Special Expenses?
Some activities with armed services are subsidised but there will be additional costs for sport and outdoor activities. Membership of a fitness centre is recommended.
