The Course
Level 1 is an ideal starting point for learners who have some practical experience of working on cars or have completed the City and Guilds 3901 course.
Course Content
Learners will study and practise work for the following units:
- V1 Contribute to workplace housekeeping
- V17 Remove and replace chassis units and components
- V76 Introduction to vehicle technology and workshop methods and processes
- V77 Carry out routine vehicle maintenance
These units will give the learner the knowledge base to aid diagnostic work on the various systems of the vehicle, as well as service and maintain the vehicle systems to operational parameters. The practical work will develop the hand skills of the learner as well as developing the range of skills required for todays modern vehicle. It is anticipated that the learner will undertake some research to gain appreciation of the vehicle systems and operation in their own time.
Progression/Career Path
After satisfactory completion of Level 1, learners could go on to employment and continue their qualification through the day release courses. Exams completed on the full time course can count towards the NVQ day release qualification.
Learners could also continue their qualification through the full time route by going on to Level 2 for another year and then to Level 3. Satisfactory completion of the three Levels could entitle the learner to progress to Higher Education.

Assessment/Exams
During the practical sessions learners will practise the assessments a number of times and their progress will be monitored and feedback given. When the learner is proficient they will undertake the assessments which must be completed to industry standards. The completed practical worksheets will be placed in a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed internally and externally. Online multi choice exams will be used to check the subject knowledge, these are devised by City and Guilds. On successful completion of exams, practical assessments and portfolio, the learner will be awarded a Certificate in Automotive Maintenance and Repair.
