Course Content

A 1 year full time course that provides students with the basic knowledge and practical skills needed to care for a variety of species. Practical instruction and work experience form an important part of the course. Practical facilities include access to a variety of reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and small mammals on-campus.

Course Features

The course covers a wide variety of species.

Work experience forms an important part of the course - students must spend the equivalent of 3 weeks at a work placement. Work placements are checked for health and safety by Careers Wales.

Students are continually assessed during their course by a combination of methods . Written assignments . Oral assignments . Group projects . Practical assessments . Written tests . External short multiple choice exam

Learning support is provided in class and through the Study Support Centre if required.

Regular tutorials monitor student progress

Keyskills IT, Communication and Application of Number are incorporated in the course.
Career Prospects and Progression

Students who successfully complete this course may progress to the Advanced National Certificate. Students may also move directly into a position in the industry; there is an increasing demand for qualified personnel with good practical skills to work in animal enterprises.

Assessment is by means of written assignments, practical assessments and an on-line multiple choice examination.

Entry Requirements

Entry is subject to successful interview. Students will need to secure a placement at which to undertake the work experience component of the course. Written confirmation by the placement provider is required before students can be enrolled.
