Why should I come to Pendleton College?
Mathematics is the only subject that can be studied beyond A-Level at Sixth Form College. Further maths provides able students with the opportunity to extend their maths knowledge by sampling some university level material. It is also a modern mathematics course where the emphasis is on making maths relevant and interesting. IT facilities are used in Further Maths.
What will I study?
You can choose to do AS Further Maths in your first year, provided you have good GCSE results including an A* grade in Maths, or you can choose to wait until you get used to A-level Maths and take AS Further Maths as a fourth subject in your second year provided you get an A in AS maths. The three modules in AS further maths are likely to be:
- Further Pure Mathematics 1
- Mechanics 1
- Decision 2
What will I achieve?
Through written examinations (one for each module).
How is the course assessed?
You will obtain a second AS or A-Level in mathematics. Many universities give reduced offers to students studying Further Maths, so you won't need as high grades to get into a good university.
What else will I do?
The Further Maths group is usually a collection of high achieving, highly motivated and very able students. It allows the tutors to set a good pace and provide very challenging problems for the students to solve. If you like mathematics and fancy a challenge then this is definitely the course for you.
