The gallery owner deals with the exhibition and sale of works of art to individuals in galleries. The main activities it carries out are therefore: the setting up of the gallery, the relationship with the artists, the choice of the works to be exhibited, the promotion and sale to individuals. The gallery owner can enter into a contract with the artist that provides for the rental of the spaces, the promotion of the works and the percentage gain on the sale or he can enter into a sales contract, in which he establishes the price based on market trends and capacities of the artist. To be a gallery owner, in addition to having an interest in art and its languages, it is necessary to know: The cultural product that must be promoted and sold, the trends of the art and the quotations of emerging and non-emerging artists and marketing techniques in the field of cultural heritage. If one thinks of the history of art, one soon realizes how galleries and gallery owners are a recent phenomenon, but today absolutely fundamental. The art market has profoundly evolved over time. In recent centuries, the commission of large works, with the commissioning of Popes or noble families, has increasingly passed to the creation of works, often small or medium-sized, designed for the market. Galleries and gallery owners as we understand them today made their appearance in the nineteenth century. Being a gallerist today is certainly different, but the guidelines of the profession and its ultimate goals have not changed much. The art gallery owner is, therefore, the one who manages the gallery, with his staff of critics and curators he sets up exhibitions and often offers various types of services for artists. There are gallery owners who are able to discover and support new talents, others who have made the fortune of unknown or already established artists, helping to increase their prices and their notoriety.
