What will I study?
The AS course consists of 3 modules:
  • Introduction to Language and Literature Study. Students study an anthology of literary and non literary texts in preparation for an examination
  • The Changing Language of Literature. Students study a pair of texts, one pre-twentieth-century and one twentieth-century and look at the way the language has changed.
  • Production of Texts. Candidates produce their own coursework texts for different audiences and purposes.
The A level course consists of 3 modules:
  • Critical Approaches. A further coursework module, which requires candidates to choose a literary work of any genre and transform it into a different genre or for a different purpose.
  • Text Transformation. Students look at a variety of different ways of approaching texts, both literary and linguistic, in preparation for an examination.
  • Talk in Life and Literature. Students study a Shakespeare play and work on the spoken language in the text and in a range of unseen texts.
Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.
Assessment
AS level students are assessed by two examinations at the end of the course (for Units 1 and 2) and by coursework (Unit 3 A level students are assessed by an examination in January of year 13 (for Unit 5), by coursework (Unit 4) and by an examination at the end of the course (for Unit 6).
How will I be taught?
You will obviously need to undertake a significant amount of reading a variety of texts. There will be significant opportunities for discussion and debate when analysing texts in class.
What qualification will I get?
GCSE AS Level /A Level English Language and Literature
What are the career opportunities?
Anything! English is one of the most universally accepted qualifications for entry to Higher Education. Qualifications in English can lead to careers in journalism, media work, advertising, business, publishing, management, the law ... even teaching.
Does it include key skills?
All students following full time courses will be expected to develop their skills in English, Maths and ICT.
