This course is for you if you are interested in Human Physiology and Health at GCSE level. The higher level course is particularly suited for students who have already taken some GSCEs or for mature students.

What are the entry requirements?
You will be given a diagnostic assessment on mathematics, literacy and comprehension. You should be at least at Basic/Key Skills Level 1 for Communications and Maths or you should have at least two GCSEs at Grade C or above or the equivalent.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
The Science : Human Physiology and Health syllabus leads to GCSE certification by a grade in the range A* - G. The exam board is AQA.

Where can it lead?
Past students have used it as an entry requirement for courses such as teacher training, dental hygienist, nursing and complementary health. It is also a preparatory step to progress to higher level courses as Access or as a requirement for promotion at work. This course will give a worthwhile educational experience for all candidates, whether or not they go on to study beyond GCSE.

What will I study?
The course develops:
* an understanding of human biology
* experimental and investigative abilities
* an understanding of the technological and environmental applications of human biology and of the economic, ethical and social implications of these.

How will I be taught?
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, practical investigations, group discussions and mock tests. Applicants should be aware that in addition to the college hours students should be able to do at least another three hours of study at home.

How will I be assessed?
The scheme of assessment comprises two components, a written exam paper, 80% of marks and coursework, 20% of marks. There are two levels, Foundation and Higher. Decision re exam entry is based on mock tests, submission of course work and being able to cover additional topics required for the Higher Paper.

What support is available while I am on the course?
Additional help is available for language and numeracy. The College's extensive learning resources are available to all students.
