Course programme

GCSE English Literature

Following a course based on this specification should encourage candidates to develop both interest in and enjoyment of literature and lays an appropriate foundation for further study of the subject or related subjects. Pupils must take this option if they wish to study English Literature at A Level.

Assessment Objectives:

Candidates are required to demonstrate their ability to:-

  • AO1: respond to texts sensitively and in detail, selecting appropriate ways to convey their response, using textual evidence as appropriate
  • AO2: explore how language, structure and forms contribute to the meanings of texts, considering different approaches to texts and alternative interpretations
  • AO3: explore relationships and comparisons between texts, selecting and evaluating relevant material
  • AO4: relate texts to their social, cultural and historical contexts and literary traditions.

Assessment:

- Coursework: Coursework accounts for 30% of the total mark for GCSE. Candidates submit a folder of written coursework assessed by centres and moderated by AQA. The folder must contain work on a minimum of three texts chosen by the centre: one drama, one poetry and one prose, none of which has been studied for the examination.

- Exam: The written examination accounts for 70% of the total marks for GCSE. Two tiers of entry are offered: Foundation tier (Tier F) targeting grades C to G and Higher tier (Tier H) targeting grades A* to D. Candidates must answer questions on their three prescribed texts - one drama, one poetry, one novel.
