Maths - Higher GCSE



COURSE AIMS
To give students the opportunity to study GCSE Mathematics beyond Foundation tier in order particularly to prepare for AS Maths or AS Use of Maths.

CONTENT
You will be studying the AQA Modular Specification based on the national curriculum. There are now 3 modules (numbered 1, 3 and 5) : (modules 2 and 4 used to be the coursework modules)
There will be particular emphasis on the development of algebraic skills.

Module 1 Handling Data
Worth 18% of the total assessment Two 30 minute exams, one with and one without a calculator

Module 3 Number and Algebra
(Mainly number work at intermediate tier) worth 27% of the total assessment Two 45 minute exams, one with and one without a calculator

Module 5 Number, Algebra, Shape and Space
Worth 55% of the total assessment Two 1 hour 15 minutes exams, one with and one without a calculator

HOW WILL I STUDY?
You will experience a variety of teaching styles:
Formal
Individual with strong teacher support
Investigational
Use of computers
Smartboard

You will be able to monitor your work and progress with regular review sheets.

You will have 4 hours of timetabled lessons per week and you will be expected to put in another 4 hours study per week outside of lessons.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
You should already have a grade C in GCSE maths taken at the Foundation tier although entry to the programme may be allowed where it is deemed appropriate.

WHERE NEXT?
This course is for students who require a Higher tier GCSE Maths qualification e.g. in order to progress to AS Maths or AS Use of Maths or who need to raise their GCSE grade above a grade C e.g. to satisfy university entrance requirements.
