Sociology GCSE



WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The aim of GCSE sociology is to help you understand more clearly the multicultural society in which you live. You will also develop the ability to use sociological research methods.

CONTENT
The content is organised into two main areas of study (four core topics and two option topics), which reflect central ideas and questions in Sociology. You will study the following topics:

Core Topics:
Family and Identity
Power and Citizenship
Education
Work and Employment

Option Topics:
Crime, Deviance and Social Control
Poverty

You will also study research methodology.

G.C.S.E. ASSESSMENT
One research project (no more than 2000 words) 20%
Two examination papers 80%

Candidates for the Foundation Tier take papers 1 and 2.
Candidates for the Higher Tier take papers 3 and 4.

Each exam paper will test your knowledge and understanding of sociological issues and your skills at interpreting and evaluating information.

Entry to the examination and level of entry will depend on satisfactory attendance and work rate.

Coursework (20%)
Candidates are required to submit one project up to 2000 words.

HOW WILL I STUDY?
The department incorporates various teaching and learning strategies. These include working in groups; class discussion; individual tutorials and self supported study. As this is an essay based course, students are encouraged to read as widely as possible. You will also be encouraged to make use of the computer software and internet resources.

WHAT DOES THE SUBJECT COMBINE WELL WITH?
Sociology can be studied alongside a range of other subjects.
